How do the New Mazda3 and Mazda6 Stack Up to Each Other?

As you explore the latest lineup of Mazda cars, you'll find a pair of attractive models that both offer excellent comfort and advanced technology in addition to engaged performance. For all they have in common though, both the Mazda3 and Mazda6 differ in several ways that can help inform your decision as to which model is best for you. Visit Jim Ellis Mazda Marietta to explore each model, but first read this primer to get a head start on finding your perfect fit.

2020 Mazda3

The new Mazda3 has landed at our dealership near Atlanta, and it brings along both a sedan and hatchback body style for you to choose from. For the first time ever, you can have the Mazda3 with all-wheel drive, adding capability and control in adverse conditions. Regardless of which drivetrain you choose, you'll have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood that makes 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Advanced direct injection improves fuel economy and the result is up to 35 mpg on the highway with the front-wheel drive model.

Inside, the Mazda3 is available with several premium features that will have you cruising Alpharetta in style. Leather-trimmed sport seats provide a comfortable ride and premium feel, while a power-sliding glass moonroof adds a touch of class to your drive. Dual-zone automatic climate control and heated seats help you manage your comfort, while the Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry and Start add convenience.

Where the Mazda3 is truly different from the Mazda6 is regarding overall space, where the smaller footprint makes it a breeze to maneuver around the tight streets of Atlanta. With an overall length of 183.5 inches and at 70.7 inches wide, the Mazda3 is compact and nimble enough to get through tight spaces. Trunk space measures at an impressive 13.2 cubic feet, while overall passenger volume is great at 92.8 cubic feet. The 53.5-inches of shoulder room and 50.9 inches of hip room in the back mean that three full-sized adult passengers might be a tight fit, but children or smaller adults will have no trouble getting comfortable.

2020 Mazda6

While the 2020 Mazda3 and Mazda6 share a variety of convenience, luxury, and technology features, the larger sibling offers much more in the way of both performance and comfort than the compact Mazda3.

For starters, the 2020 Mazda6 is available with two different engines, each offering a unique experience. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder is similar to the Mazda3 version, with the larger Mazda6 making 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. While you won't find an all-wheel drive option available with the new Mazda6, a turbocharged engine is available to take performance to the next level. A 2.5-liter turbo generates 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque to deliver a true thrill when you want to put your foot down. And because the turbocharger adds power via high-pressure airflow rather than increasing fuel consumption, overall fuel economy remains strong at up to 31 mpg highway.

The other notable difference that sets the Mazda6 apart from it's smaller sibling is the overall size. The trunk volume increases to 14.7 cubic feet, giving you room for one extra carryon bag should you need it. Inside, your passengers will notice a more comfortable experience thanks to 55.1 inches of shoulder room and 53.5 inches of hip room in the rear seats. While that difference may not look large at first, the overall increase in passenger area is large, at 99.7 cubic feet for the Mazda6 compared to 92.8 cubic feet for the Mazda3.
