This month, Mazda will be shipping the first of the 2024 CX-90 models for delivery to the public beginning April 1.
The Mazda CX-90 is larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than its predecessor, the CX-9. This three-row-crossover SUV offers the choice of three electrified powertrains and 11 model options. The CX-90 has a starting MSRP of $39,595 and a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. The CX-90 is in part of a new series of vehicles by Mazda, including the CX-30, CX-50, and the soon-to-come CX-60 and CX-70.
The three Mazda CX-90 variants include the CX-90 3.3 Turbo, the CX-90 3.3 Turbo S and the CX-90 PHEV.
The CX-90 3.3 Turbo with a standard M Hybrid Boost engine produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. M-Hybrid Boost is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, making the SUV efficient without compromising performance. The estimated gas mileage is 24 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. The 3.3 Turbo S houses Mazda’s signature and most powerful gasoline engine, the AC Synchronous e-Skyactiv Inline six-engine. This high-output engine is capable of producing 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This power is achieved, without significantly impacting gas mileage, also thanks to a mild hybrid component. Fuel economy is estimated at 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.
Mazda is also releasing its first-ever Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) with the launch of the CX-90. The e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain, paired with a traditional, four-cylinder engine produces a combined 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle has been designed to operate primarily using the electric powertrain but offers the four-cylinder engine for the driver’s peace of mind. Specific gas mileage specifications have not yet been released but will be forthcoming shortly. The PHEV version will be available in early May.
All come with Mazda’s eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, specially made for this new design. i-Activ all-wheel drive technology is standard providing rear-biased performance. Additionally, all CX-90 models include Mazda Intelligent Drive Select with Sport, Off-Road and Towing modes, and Kinematic Posture Control, a software feature first debuted on the MX-5 Miata that suppresses body lift on tight corners to enhance the grip and help all occupants to maintain a natural posture.
Safety is a priority for Mazda and the CX-90 offers advanced safety features for both the driver and passengers, including Smart City Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Driver Attention Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Finally, all CX-90 models are equipped with revolutionary technology which involves a rear seat sensor, which will alert drivers when an object or passenger is in the back seat upon exiting the vehicle.
