The Mazda CX-5 is an incredibly attractive and performance-focused small SUV, and many shoppers come to Jim Ellis Mazda Marietta to buy or lease one so they can feel extra stylish as they zip around town! We're here to also remind potential owners that the Mazda CX-5 has a "rugged" side, and that if you need to you can do some light towing with this model.

Mazda CX-5 Tow Ratings

The Mazda CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds with either engine. That's more than most Toyota RAV4 trims and the Subaru Forester. If you plan on topping out that tow rating, towing long distances, or towing up a lot of hills, we suggest getting either the Grand Touring Reserve or the Signature trims. They have standard Predictive I-ACTIV AWD® and a stronger 2.5T Turbo with 227 horsepower and 250 lb-ft. Torque is useful when you need to get an object moving, which is why we suggest going with this engine instead of the base engine.

It's also important to remember that if you're towing something with a trailer that you need to take inconsideration the weight of the item you're towing and the trailer.

Real-Life Towing

Towing specs help you easily see how models compare to the competition, but they don't necessarily do a great job telling you what you can tow. We suggest reading Mazda CX-5 forums and even checking on Google Images, as we think you'll be impressed with what a 2,000 pound tow rating can offer! That said, here's an idea of what the Mazda CX-5 can bring along for the ride:

  • A small camper or pop up camper
  • One or two jet skis
  • A small boat
  • A trailer with a smaller ride-on mower or a trailer filled with lawn & garden supplies
  • ATV or dirt bikes

Towing Accessories

Now that you have an idea of what the Mazda CX-5 can tow, you'll want to make sure the one you buy or lease (or currently have) is properly equipped. That means you'll need a Class I trailer hitch and you'll also need a four-pin trailer lighting connector so that people behind you know when you're turning.

As always, we highly suggest working with our parts team to buy a Genuine Mazda Part or Accessory. Unlike an aftermarket purchase that might save you some money, a Genuine one is built to fit your vehicle exactly. We think this is especially important when it comes to towing.

Other Tow-Friendly Purchases

You don't need the following accessories to tow, but they aren't a bad idea to have, especially if you're towing to muddy or dusty places:

Splash guards All-weather floor mats A rear bumper guard Roof rails so you can add on a rack if you want to bring along more items
