The 2011 Mazda RX-8 is equipped with the lightweight 1.3 liter RENESIS rotary engine that is mounted low in the chassis delivering a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. The 2-rotor design is actually less complex and more dependable than a traditional piston engine because it has fewer moving parts. This engine is meant to perform with the 6-side intake ports with 3-stage variable induction system (VIS) and a variable fresh air duct.
Variable Induction System (VIS) - This is an intake manifold configuration which includes two sets of runners. Airflow to these runners is regulated by butterfly valves and the vehicle computer. At lower engine speeds, air is forced through the longer intake runners to increase torque. Once the engine reaches a preset threshold speed, the car's computer opens the butterfly valves that cover the shorter set of intake runners which increases airflow for higher engine rpm. This system allows the car's engine to produce more power with increased efficiency. An Electromagnetic Oil Metering Pump (E-MOP) is equipped to ensure optimal lubrication is present during more aggressive driving and sharp cornering.
